What is Acne?

Acne is a disease of the hair follicles of the face, chest, and back that affects almost all males and females during puberty. It is caused by the overproduction of oil by the oil glands of the skin. While it is not dangerous, acne can leave skin scars.

The skin has pores (tiny holes) which connect to oil glands located under the skin. The glands are connected to the pores via follicles - small canals. Sebum, an oily liquid, is produced by these glands. The sebum carries dead skin cells through the follicles to the surface of your skin.

A small hair grows through the follicle out of the skin the oil that normally lubricates the skin gets trapped in blocked oil ducts and results in what we know as pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads on the surface of skin. Sometimes it also includes deeper skin lesions that are called cysts.
