Cities across Israel are being decorated in white and blue and Israeli flags are being hung everywhere to prepare for the upcoming monumental day of Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel Independence Day. Yom Ha’atzmaut inevitably follows after Yom Hazikaron, Israel Memorial Day in which memorial services are held for fallen soldiers and victims of terror throughout Israel.

Everyone living in Israel has been affected by terrorism and wars one way or the other. Any Israeli you meet will know of someone who perished in the terror attacks or in one of the wars. But what does it mean to those who did not fight in any of the wars or experienced terrorism in Israel first hand? While the idea of honoring the memories of those who fell during these tragic moments may seem commendable to us, what does it mean to mourn for the loss of someone or something that we never had?
