Yom Hazikaron: Should it still Matter to Us?

This Sunday will
mark Yom Hazikaron. Yom Hazikaron, Hebrew for Israel Memorial Day, is the day
dedicated to honor the memory of fallen soldiers and victims of terror in
Israel. National services are held and
families of the fallen visit graves of loved ones and hold eulogies. Yom Hazikaron
commences with a one-minute siren on the preceding evening in pursuant to the Jewish
calendar.
As the siren
wails, the country comes to a standstill, including cars on roads and highways,
making for a unique experience for those who have never encountered it before. The Israel Memorial ceremony usually takes
place at the Western Wall where the Israeli flag is lowered to half-mast. The Prime Minister will address a speech to
express condolences to the victims loved ones and remind us the importance of
defending the State of Israel from impending terror threats of the surrounding
Arab countries. Loved ones such as widows, widowers, orphans, and siblings of
the fallen soldiers will speak about them.
Yom
Hazikaron is not only a day to commemorate the fallen soldiers and victims of
terror. It should be a reminder to us that we are still alive and standing to
their heroism. It is also to honor the veterans and soldiers for their bravery.
Whether you have served in the army or not, it behooves you to express your
utmost gratitude towards those who nobly risk their lives on a daily basis to
protect us from harm and danger.
So what can
we do to show our sympathy and appreciation on this eventful day? When you see
an Israeli soldier, thank him or her for their services. Let them know how
grateful you are to have the most courageous and moral army in the Middle East
such as the IDF (Israeli Defense Force) serving Israel. Donating to
organizations that support Israeli soldiers is another way to express your
appreciation towards their services.
Even though you
may not be able to empathize with the pain and loss that most people who have
lost a loved one experience, express your condolences. Be sympathetic and
respectful. Let them know how much you admire and appreciate the victim’s heroism.
Offer to reach out to their children who are currently serving in the army.
They deserve our unconditional gratitude and support too. The most we can do as
civilians is showing it to them.
