Facts and Myths about Weight Loss and Fitness

01-30-2013 / By: Easy Life

There are many misconceptions about weight loss and fitness. While some rules are necessary to follow when trying to stay in shape, but other tips may not be as accurate or can even extenuate your goals to lose weight. With all the suggestions and arguments as to which weight loss fads work the best, it can sometimes be hard to distinct between the ones are true and which are false.

According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases a number of common myths continue to circulate regarding the so-called rules of dieting. A person following a wrong advice for weight loss and fitness is highly susceptible to a disappointing and harmful outcome. It is, therefore, essential to know what is right and what is wrong before embarking on something you are uncertain about.

Consistent dieting and exercising prevents weight gain

While eating healthy and exercising regularly is important to staying fit and losing weight, consistency is not the solution to permanent weight loss.  As a person grows older, his/her metabolic capacity reduces. Changes in metabolism are evident after the age of 40 years, after which the metabolic capacity keeps on reducing gradually. Therefore, a person may need to increase exercising or reduce eating to match the changes in the body. Consistent exercising may not help in weight loss in the long run.

Calories do not exist in fat-free food

The fact is many low-fat or fat-free foods frequently contain a reduced number of calories. However, a lot of processed low-fat or fat-free foods don't have any fewer calories that the regular full-fat versions of the same foods. In fact, some may actually have more calories because ingredients such as sugar or starch thickeners are added to enhance flavor and texture once fat is removed.

Carbohydrates should be eliminated from your diet

Carbohydrates are actually an important source of energy. That doesn’t necessarily that mean low-carb diets are irrelevant. Carbs are not all created equal, and to help you drop some weight, you should limit your consumption on processed carbs such as white bread and croissants. Instead, enjoy beans and whole grains, such as brown rice and whole-wheat bread. Fruits and vegetables can also provide a host of nutrients and fiber that are low in calories, and can help reduce the risk of obesity and heart disease.

Skipping meals can help you lose weight

On the contrary, skipping meals can lead to weight gain. The body needs certain nutrients everyday in order to function properly. Skipping meals will create a deficiency in the body, which will have a negative effect on the body instead of helping you lose weight. Apart from that, it makes you eat more and you end up adding extra calories in your body which are in no way beneficial.

Eating after 8 p.m. can cause weight gain

The issue doesn’t lie with what time of day or night do you eat. It’s rather about how much you eat. The reason some diets suggest you close the kitchen after enjoying the early-bird special is that people have a tendency to overeat at night, especially if they have skipped a meal during the day. If you are finding yourself binging at night, chances are you are not eating anywhere near enough good calories during the day.

Only vegetarian diets help in weight loss and red meat should be avoided

While red meat contains some amount of cholesterol and fat, they also contain other essential nutrients like iron, zinc and protein. While those on a vegetarian diet may appear to be thinner than those who are not, this does not ensure a weight reduction.  If a person's choice includes foods with high fat and calorific content, following a vegetarian diet will not help. A small amount of red meat may be included in your diet.

Weight loss products that  are labeled  "Natural" or  "Herbal" are safe  and effective

A lot of people who are desperately looking to take a shortcut for weight loss gullibly fall for this gimmick. Just because you can buy something in a health food store doesn't mean it's healthy. Unless and until a product's claims have been evaluated by the FDA, you should be skeptical. And, in any event, it's worth consulting a physician before taking any drugs. Not all diet pills are unsafe.

If you are not sweating enough while exercising that means you are not working hard enough

There isn’t a palpable correlation between perspiration and weight loss. The only thing sweat signifies is that the body is working to cool itself off. Everyone sweats differently. And, anyway, it is not clear that working out for a shorter period at a higher intensity is better than working out for a longer duration at a lower intensity.
In terms of weight loss, what works best for your lifestyle and your schedule is what is going to work best -- because you'll stick with it. Your muscles will continue to burn calories after both aerobic and anaerobic exercise.

Your body won't burn fat unless you exercise for more than 20 minutes

People generally burn calories and fat around the clock no matter where they are or what they may be doing. For the biggest calorie burn, exercise as hard as you comfortably can (you should still be able to carry on a conversation) for as long as you can.

Early mornings are the best time to exercise

There isn’t a best time of day to exercise. You can exercise any time of the day and still get the same results and burn the same number of calories whenever you work out. Some studies have shown that those who exercise in the mornings are more likely to stick with a regimen than those who start late in the day, but that's because it's probably easier to postpone an evening workout until tomorrow.  What’s most important is doing it regularly.
